Running: what to wear

Running is a popular, gratifying sport that offers numerous health benefits. However it’s essential to wear appropriate clothing for running, to guarantee maximum comfort, protection and performance.

In this article, we’ll be taking a look at the best ways to dress for running, with a focus on how to tackle winter weather. Every detail makes the difference for running, from the choice of shorts to shoe lacing (link to the article we’ll be publishing separately).

How to wear in winter

Running in low temperatures can be a real challenge, but the right clothing can allow you to handle the weather and enjoy your run with no worries.

Here are a few tips on how to dress to tackle the cold:

  • Layering:Wearing several layers of clothing will allow you to regulate body temperature. For running in temperatures of between 4° and 10° C, we suggest you always start with breathable technical underwear that’s able to absorb humidity. A cotton t-shirt isn’t a good idea, for example, because humidity soaks into it and it stays wet all the way through your run.

For running at even lower temperatures, between 0° and 4° C, you could add a light, breathable middle layer to keep the cold out, such as a long-sleeved shirt.

Last but not least, add a wind and water-resistant outer layer, such as a windbreaker jacket or a sleeveless jacket

  • Hat, gloves and socks: we tend to lose body heat from the extremities, so it’s important to protect your hands, head and feet from the cold. Be sure to wear a hat or a thermal beanie, gloves, and a pair of long waterproof socks, or socks resistant to humidity. In the Erreà accessories section, you’ll find everything you need for a great running experience, even in the coldest weather.

  • Visibility: During the winter, days are shorter and therefore visibility may be reduced. Be sure to wear clothes or accessories that are easily visible, such as a jacket or hat with reflective strips, to keep you safe in conditions where lighting is poor.

  • Avoid covering up too much: Choose light clothing, in technical fabrics, so they don’t hinder movement and allow you to run smoothly.

How to choose running shorts

Running shorts are a key element in your running outfit, because they need to ensure comfort and freedom of movement. Here are a few tips on how to choose the right running shorts:

  • Breathable fabric: Choose shorts made from breathable fabric to help wick away sweat. Materials such as polyester or nylon are often used for running shorts, because they help keep the skin dry and prevent irritation.

  • Fit: Make sure your shorts have a comfortable fit, and that they are neither too tight nor too slack. Models with an elastic waist can be more comfortable.

  • Length:Running shorts come in a variety of lengths: short, mid-thigh and knee-length. Choose the length that allows you to move freely and that best suits your personal preferences.

  • Pockets: Opt for shorts with pockets to hold small objects such as your keys, phone or energy gel during your run.
